There's the temptation to make this thoroughly AU, add aliens specifically designed to be powerful adversaries for our protagonists, and set it in the same universe as Death of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse so that Kronos, Caspian and Silas can all be part of the fight. There's really nothing like an overwhelming shared enemy to help cast experienced killers into the role of protagonist.
