difference between fanfic and original

I'm about to finish up my most recent fanfic story, Seeing Eyes. I've been posting it chapter by chapter, as I write them. It's fun and lets me get reviews back as I go, however, I can definitely see why this is not done in professional writing, even when a story will be published as a serial. Getting the timing and plot arch just right is tricky and once it's off there's really not all that much that can be done about it.
I could, of course, take it down, edit it, and post it again, but if I'm going to put that much effort into a story, then i want it to be an original one that I have more ownership of than a fanfic. Ah well. It was still fun to write and is turning into a learning experience.
Hopefully it's still enjoyable despite the weaknesses.
