So last year, there was Ninjas and Cowboys: The Warrior's Way

And this year, the must anticipated, Cowboys and Aliens:

So, my point is, surely next year there needs to be an Aliens and Ninjas movie, right? Right!

So, does anyone know what/where/how/who this is?

Hey All,

I've been mugged by the real world recently. Way too many things to do and not nearly enough time to do it all in. I'm still reading fanfic but writing it has pretty much completely fallen by the wayside at this point. For that matter, so too has reading or watching any canon. The only TV I watched all season was Sherlock and the only fiction novel was Bayou Moon.

My only idea for fanfic recently has been something where Lestrade comes to Sherlock with this incredibly peculiar case where someone got their head cut off and then there was a mysterious lightning storm and ..., and Sherlock thinks it is all incredibly boring and don't they realize this is merely The Game that those few people play and it's hardly a murder and why are the police wasting their own time on this much less Sherlock's?

Anyway, here are two dreamwidth invite codes that are free to a good home:

And finally, one real-world question:

What, if anything, can replace chocolate in baking?
Is there any coffee product maybe that has the same dessert-yet-bitter effect? I've tried making chocolate chip cookies with heath bar bits rather than chocolate chips but it's too sweet. Same problem for replacing a chocolate crust with a graham cracker crust. Let me know if you have something.

In the mean time, Happy New Year to you all!

Cheers,

mg

Are there any Criminal Minds / Highlander fanfic out there? I did a brief google search and didn't find any. Peculiar, given that hte one show has a bunch of serial killers as both good guys and bad guys and the other show focuses on track such killers down. Plus, Matthew McCormick from Highlander is an FBI profiler. If anyone knows of any crossover fics for this, please let me know.

I recently stumbled across What's Special About This Number?, a perfectly awesome website that shows math trivia. This reminded me of one my gripes about Numb3rs fanfic. There are some very good stories in this fandom, but I have found very, very few that actually center around any math.

Are there just too few math majors writing fanfic? Surely not.

Is it too hard? It can't possibly be. After all, I have personally heard Quakerism explained by the solving of a quadratic equation, which is alas, not online, although I may need to bug the author to post it. (You know who you are, You-Know-Who.)

Admittedly, the canon authors aren't doing much better. However, frankly, that's more common than not, and most fanfic authors seem to take inspiration from the failing of the canon authors to Do It Right. So I would really like some authors to go do it right. And then let me know.

Anyway, for inspiration, here are links to the few stories I have found that are at least vaguely math-based:

The Arms of the Galaxy by [livejournal.com profile] audrarose

Calculus Is Easy by [profile] frostfire_17

Game Theory by [profile] halcyon_shift

Alas, I do mean "vaguely"

If anyone reading this has more suggestions, please let me know.

Christmas is a time of joy and family and presents and what not. And I do enjoy it a great deal. The religious backdrop is one of joy and family and presents, too, God having created a family and a redemption and a lot of gifts being given every which way.

However, I'd like to draw your attention to the actual events of the nativity, which were: a poor family has a child they can't actually afford and certainly didn't plan for. Three kings arrive and give the family gifts with the understanding that this infant is going to grow up and do great things. Shepherds are being confronted by hosts of angels. And within the next few years hundreds, possibly thousands, of young children will be slaughtered in the name of King Harod.

Thus, without at all negating the time of joy, family, and presents that I have and am enjoying right now, I'd like some of the Christmas carols to be re-recorded.

There are plenty of Christmas carols that deal with shepherds being told by angels not to worry but to celebrate. I'd like a hard death metal version of that. Something where it's clear why the shepherds' first reaction would be to cringe away. Think: hosts (that's a lot) of angels (these are the type known to carry flaming swords and smite whole cities) all celebrating and singing (this would be loud and not really controlled.)

But the Christmas carol that's actually my favorite and the one that I want re-done the most is "We Three Kings of Orient Are." It would need four singers: one for each king and one for the star in the chorus. Currently I'm thinking Evanescense to sing "star of holy beauty bright" high and clear and piercing. Then maybe Gavin Friday to describe his gift of mryh as a "bitter perfume, breathes a life of gathering gloom". I'm less sure who I'd want giving frankincense to give it the sense of opium visions that are somewhat implied,  or to give gold to an infant "king forever, ceasing never" to give it the proper sense of shackles.

Thus, my thoughts on Christmas carols.

Happy Holidays everyone!
