Thinking of stars slowly shifting position, it occurs to me that one of the reasons why an immortal would travel a fair bit would be to leave and return to language groups at great enough intervals so that all the variations in the language wouldn't just mush together. It's hard enough for one generation to understand the slang of another, can you imagine living for a thousand years and having to stay current in a single language?
