I just watched my first two episodes of "Merlin" and it is quite good. My first impressions are:
1. The whole series is a very well done AU of Arthurian legend. And the difference between fandoms and canons gets both less clear and more dependent on specific copyright law. This show is fanfiction and I like it.
2. I was very impressed with Uther because I had originally avoided the show in part because I thought having Rupert Giles as king would just be too much for me. Instead, Uther is definitely his own distinct character. Anthony Stewart Head is quite wonderful.
3. Merlin looks a lot like Methos. I mean A LOT. Surely there has to be a fanfic out there in which Methos is Merlin's father. (There's enough magic and destiny floating around in "Merlin" that it could definitely be done and while Methos might be gobsmacked at the fact that he was capable of fathering a son, it could be explained.) If anyone knows of such, let me know.
And I realize my first impressions all tend to be rather meta in nature, but that does not mean it's not an incredibly cute show that I definitely recommend.
